5 Thoughts believes that by creating a single gender co-institutional school, grades 6-12, with a STEM-focused blended learning curriculum, we will be able to address the different learning needs of gender/race at a pivotal time in their development, close learning gaps among the students who attend Urban Lyceum Charter School, while aligning them to understand and become prepared to consider careers and opportunities within STEM related industries, primarily within Austin and Central Texas.

Urban Lyceum will utilize a blended learning approach combining face to face classroom methods with personalized computer-mediated activities to form an integrated instructional approach. The computer mediated activities will enable individualized instruction through online adaptive technology and teaching assistants. The school will implement a strategic parent engagement initiative that will empower parents, improve teacher morale, and ultimately support learning; and a strategic compensation program for highly effective educators.
Closing the achievement gap in Central Texas will hinge on our revolutionary school model that encompasses the following modalities and distinguishes our school from other schools in the surrounding area:
Gender Uniqueness – Urban Lyceum will be a small co-institutional campus where both male and female students study on the same campus but classes are single-gender.
Instructional Fusion – Urban Lyceum will implement a hybrid instructional model that blends multiple instructional strategies, tactics & learning activities to meet the individual needs of our students.
Global Awareness – Urban Lyceum will raise global awareness and through our proven STEM curriculum, prepare our students for life and work in the 21st Century.
Emancipated Minds – Urban Lyceum encourages students to think outside the bounds of convention, and to learn by exploring and discovering things for themselves.
Professional Teaching – Urban Lyceum will require teachers to challenge themselves to think—and teach—from a global perspective while leadership works to elevate the profession of teaching by enabling this high-level within a highly rewarding manner and commensurate compensation.
Our mission is to eliminate the achievement gap. We will do this while providing an exemplary learning community that nurtures and inspires boys and girls to become men and women who:
Urban Lyceum's seven core principles foster a cohesive and collective sense of purpose and a safe, orderly environment where learning and character development take precedence.
